In case you were wondering what "2051" was about in the title of my last post, it was something I realized I didn't have space for but here it is now. 2051 is the name of an art exhibit I saw at Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso created by Oaxacan artist, Alejandro Santiago. In this exhibition he set out to represent the 2051 residents from his little pueblo of Teococuilco in the mountains near Oaxaca who became migrants seeking a better life in the USA. He, along with his team, created these sculptures to represent the immigrants and highlight the phenomenon of these hollowed out towns all over Mexico whose economies have been destroyed by NAFTA and US corporate interests. I didn't count but I believe all 2501 pieces were on display. As well there was a film documenting his life and the evolution of his art. I found it immensely moving.
Alejandro Santiago only lived to the age of 49 but left quite a legacy. I highly recommend this documentary: https://www.bondlatin.com/alejandro-santiagoh
It definitely enhances an understanding of the background and vision of this project and the artist.
And San Ildefonso is a beautiful old building.
